What is Film Board?

The Michigan Tech Film Board is the student group behind the movies that are shown in Fisher 135. We present movies every weekend during Fall and Spring semester (except breaks). We have over 30 members who choose what movies to show, sell tickets and concessions, and even project them.

Film Board is a theater grade second-run theater complete with a 40 foot screen, high quality projector, and a brand new 7.1 Dolby surround sound system. This system is completely paid for and run by Film Board. A second-run theater plays movies that are out of theaters but not yet on DVD/Blu-Ray. Some movies that we have showed in the last few years include Thor: Ragnarok, Baby Driver, Star Wars 7, Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Inside Out, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and many many more! \

Do I need a Michigan Tech ID to see a movie?

No! Whether you are student, faculty, community member, or a passing visitor Film Board welcomes everyone to our shows!

If you have a Tech ID on you, please tap it on the ID tapper before heading into the theater! This helps us keep track of how many students are enjoying our shows each weekend.

For our 3D shows, we recommend a Tech ID to check out glasses, but it’s not an absolute requirement (another form of ID or a credit card will work).

What kind of equipment does the Film Board have?

Film Board has a Barco DP-2000 digital cinema projector fed by a Dolby cinema server and show player at the heart of its system, as well as a 35mm Simplex projector with a Strong Lume-X 2000 watt lamphouse for viewing legacy film prints. A Dolby Digital sound processor pumps 7.1 channels of surround sound to the speakers installed in Fisher 135.

What types of accessibility options does Film Board provide?

Film Board ties into the T-coil system in Fisher 135 with our cinema sound processor in order to provide accessibility to our films for the hearing impaired.

With most showings, we also have the ability to show the film with subtitles, so ask the projectionist before the show to set them up. We are happy to put them on!

How are movies chosen?

Film Board votes on movies roughly 3-4 times a year. We vote on about 4 movies each time we vote, voting from a list of movies from a variety of distributors. These distributors (mainly Swank and Criterion) have all the latest movies that are out of theaters but not yet out on DVD, that’s why we are called a second run theater. Film Board typically does a great job bringing movies to campus that we think the Tech community will enjoy!

Have a suggestion? Use our Contact Form to let us know! We take every suggestion into account when voting on movies!

How do I join the Film Board?

Simple! Come to two of our weekly meetings and you’ll be in! We hold meetings in Fisher 127 at 6pm every Tuesday. At your second meeting, you’ll fill out a little questionnaire and introduce yourself to the rest of the Film Board members. After that you will be a Film Board member!

As a Film Board member, you can get 4 friends in for free each weekend to watch the movie with you and free popcorn. You pop the popcorn, sell the concessions and tickets, you can even project the weekend shows!

Still have questions about joining? Email our Vice President and they will fill you in! See our Officers page for contact information.
